Haymaking camp in Transylvania July/August 2019

The annual Scything and haymaking camp in Gyimesbukk, Transylvania will take place this year from Sunday July 28th to Sunday August 4th. EuCAN groups have taken part in 2016 and 2018, having visited the area in 2011 and 2012. It is a magical part of Europe. The farm where the haycamp takes place is as traditional as you will find anywhere in Europe in 2019, with much of the transport being provided by horses, the food being largely homegrown, and the landscape still relatively unspoilt by the modern intensive agricultural methods that have destroyed much of the biodiversity in the UK.

Attila Sarig and his young family make their own cheese, paprika sausage, and apple juice and provide sustainably reared local meat and homegrown vegetables. Breakfast tea is an infusion of herbs and flowers gathered from the fields and trackways. There are wonderful butterflies and the variety of moths in our moth traps in 2011 was phenomenal.

We would like to help Attila find enough people for this week to enable him to cut and gather in enough hay to provide for his cattle and horses through the winter (which can last a long time and be very severe). If you would like to take part, you will need to make your way to Romania where you will be collected from the nearby train station at Miercurea Ciuc (Czik Szereda in Hungarian). We would recommend that you organise your holiday so that you have time before or after the camp to explore and enjoy this fascinating part of Europe. If enough people are interested it might be possible to join up to travel together.

The cost of the camp is extremely inexpensive, around 35 euros per night for the 7 nights including full board, accommodation and transport in the local area.
